Motor Company Minutes, 1982

    The first year application of MAN (Materials-As-Needed) or just-in-time production.

    This is the Sportster's 25th Anniversary.

    The first year of the new custom-paint program.

    H-D petitions International Trade Commission for tariff relief from Japan motorcycles.

    President Ronald Reagan imposes five-year additional tariffs on all Japanese 700cc-or-larger imports.

    Layoffs total 1,600 out of 3,800 employees.

    Aggressive program initiated to clean up all bootleg H-D merchandise.

    In May, more than 100 riders leave the Capitol Drive plant on protest ride to Madison in response to Wisconsin  State Police using Kawasaki motorcycles.

    Advertising budget is estimated at about $3 million.
